Description
Avalanche lilies along Hurricane Ridge in Washington state's Olympic National Park.
.....
Olympic National Park is located in the U.S. state of Washington, in the Olympic Peninsula. The park can be divided into four basic regions: the Pacific coastline, alpine areas, the west side temperate rainforest and the forests of the drier east side. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt originally created Mount Olympus National Monument in 1909 and after Congress voted to authorize a re-designation to National Park status, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the legislation June 29, 1938. In 1976, Olympic National Park became an International Biosphere Reserve, and in 1981 it was designated a World Heritage Site. In 1988, Congress designated 95 percent of the park as the Olympic Wilderness.
.....
Erythronium montanum (avalanche lily, white avalanche lily) is a member of the lily family native to coastal British Columbia and the alpine and subalpine Olympic and Cascade Ranges of the Pacific Northwest of North America.
Blooms shortly after snowmelt in late spring, in damp subalpine woodlands and alpine meadows, often in extensive patches. Blooming plants may persist into midsummer about the edges of snowfields. In the central Cascades, it is often found flowering admixed with Clintonia uniflora and Trillium ovatum at the lower elevation end of its range, and with Anemone occidentalis at higher elevations. Distinguishing characteristics of this species are the oblong-lanceolate unmottled leaves and tepals that are white with a yellow base. Except for flower color, it is similar to Erythronium grandiflorum, which has a range that includes that of E. montanum.

Amazing image! I love how the golden glow at the top mirrors the color of the lilies. L/F

WOW! I almost burst into song ... and I can't sing a note ... unlike Julie Andrews. A wonderful photograph once again. And I finally glanced at the side-bar and saw that it is a digital. How do you get such richness from a digital? What kind of camera do you use?
Inge Johnsson replied:
Hi Shannon. Your nice, and funny, comments are much appreciated. I use a Canon 5D Mk II (I now also have a Mk III) with various Canon L lenses. For this image I used a Canon TS-E 24/3.5L tilt-shift lens. As for rich colors and tones, I believe it is a combination of shooting late or early in the day when the light is warm and angled, plus sometimes increasing the "vibrance" of the unsaturated colors in post processing (LightRoom). I shoot my captures in RAW (Canon CR).

Inge Johnsson replied:
This is one of my favorite places on earth and for this shot I worked hard to time my visit for when the Avalanche lilies were in bloom. Thank you so much for your kind words!

What a unreal place! Paradise? Love it! Fav and Vote!
Inge Johnsson replied:
Thanks Elena. I have explored this area so extensively, so I try to visit certain places when I know that certain flowers are in bloom. It is indeed paradise to me :-)
